This photo was taken at my sister’s cottage on Wood Lake in Muskoka, Ontario. She and her husband recently bought the place and it came with a wide assortment of nicknacks and clutter and tons of old books. They donated most of it but decided to keep this old pair of snow shoes hanging above the fireplace.
Staring at the snow shoes I was reminded of my other shot of Charlie’s Moose -the big moose on the wall of the old hunting lodge in BC. The shoes are a similar size to the moose head and displayed in a similar manner.
Then I went up to them to take a closer look and saw that they were made in Lac Megantic, Quebec. Torpedo is the brand name. I guess, back in the day, these shoes where the winter equivalent of a pair of Nike running shoes. Built for speed.
I liked the idea of taking a piece of cottage country back to the city. Then stone fireplace, the wood and leather show shoes, the feeling of being warm and dry in a cottage when it’s cold and snowy outside.
